The waters around Tromsø are home to some of Norway’s most spectacular marine wildlife. Two species dominate the winter whale watching season: orcas (killer whales) and humpback whales.

Orcas (Killer Whales)

Orcas are perhaps Tromsø’s most famous visitors. These intelligent apex predators follow the Norwegian spring-spawning herring into the fjords each winter.

Key Facts:

• Size: Males up to 8m, females up to 6m
• Identification: Black and white coloring, tall dorsal fin, white eye patch
• Group size: Typically 5-30 individuals in family pods
• Best viewing: November through January

Humpback Whales

Humpback whales often accompany orcas to feast on the same herring schools. They’re known for their spectacular surface behaviors.

Key Facts:

• Size: Up to 16m and 30 tons
• Identification: Long pectoral fins, knobby head, distinctive tail fluke patterns
• Behavior: Breaching, bubble-net feeding, tail slapping
